Chapter Fourteen

Ruben

My skin crawled like a thousand ants marched across it with each passing moment that I was separated from Allura. Priests babbled in the background about families and their importance. They even had a massive diagram with all the dragon colours and their functions on it. My patience grew slimmer by the minute.

A muted scream in the distance stilled my body, and my heart stopped for several seconds before racing a staccato beat. I strode from the room with priests trailing behind me. The beast that resided deep inside me clawed its way to the forefront, my anger fuelling his fire. My chest and neck burned, and my skin felt too tight.

Another scream. My strides lengthened. Darius joined me in the corridor, and we shared an uneasy look.

“Where would they take her?” I barely held my shit together.

His lips pursed, “She was supposed to be in the medical unit, I’m just coming from there. The emerald guards collected her a while ago — Mother sent for me.”

Darius led the way to a large, dark cavern with little light and locked doorways that were flush with the cavern wall. The rooms behind them must have been dug into the stone. A crowd of men in green military attire formed an awkward circle ahead of us, their panicked looks revealing they were troubled.

I pushed my way through, and the bottom fell out of my world. Allura lay in a heap, her body broken and chains wrapped around her wrists and neck. Her flesh possessed too many wounds to begin to count, and blood poured freely onto the floor. The beautiful golden dress she wore was shredded.

A growl rattled up my throat and the walls shook, dust cascading around us. I dropped to my knees and gathered her against my chest. This was the last thing I believed they would do — she was their kin. Allura’s lips moved but no sound emerged. Her face was so swollen I couldn’t see her beautiful eyes.

Darius ripped the chains from her body, and I absently noted the magical symbols on them. They had tethered her and suppressed her with magic while they beat her like cowards.

“Who the fuck dared to lay a hand on my sister?” Darius hollered.

Anger vibrated inside me until the whole world turned red. I wanted to kill every one of them, destroy them all. Instead, all of my focus rested on Allura. I pulled every excess piece of energy from my body and channelled it into her using a healing enchantment. I brushed her bloodstained hair off her face and studied her.

My fangs descended until they pierced my lower lip. I ripped through the flesh on my wrist and tried to pour my blood into her mouth. She needed all the help she could get to try and stop the trauma her body had gone through.

A gasp diverted my attention, and Allura’s mother stood looking down at us in horror, her hands covering her mouth. Suddenly, we were surrounded by Gaians in white cotton tops and trousers prising Allura’s unconscious body from my grasp.
